Let’s start the year creating new habits 👊
A new year starts and with it a new attempt to write and update my blog more often, same as the latest three years, I know, shame on me.
I want to start reviewing the last year to recap what I have done professional and personal terms.
Professionally
I am a freelancer, but since the end of 2014 90% of my work has been for the WiredInvestors guys (Yes, before WiredInvestors existed as it).
Let WordPress aside for awhile.
The first half of the year I was entirely dedicated to the new WiredInvestors acquisition, Long Tail Pro.
Long Tail Pro is a powerful keyword research software. Long Tail Pro allows the user to generate hundreds or thousands of unique “Long Tail” keywords in a matter of minutes based on one single root keyword or multiple root keywords at once.
I was in charge to design and implement a cache system to store all the data obtained from the desktop app and create a public REST API to read/write this new data and used in the cloud-based app.
Let me tell you that this was a one-man show project; I build this from scratch.
- Servers Setup
- Database Design
- REST API Coding
- Desktop Client modification to consume the new REST API.
Also, I was in charge for all the new implementations and bug fixes in the Desktop Client, an Adobe Air App, until the cloud-based app was ready.
Technology involved
- ActionScript 3
- Flex
- Laravel 5.2
Back to WordPress
The second half of the year Wired Investor added more sites to its portfolio and took care of them, starting with the migration to our servers, optimization, security measures, custom plugins, etc. In total, I’m in charge of 5 sites right now and I’m sure this year we will have more.
Code
The best way to get a quick reference about how much code I made in this year is taking a look at my GitHub profile.
My most popular repository is my WordPress Plugin Boilerplate Generator followed by my JWT Authentication Plugin
- 545 Contributions
- 6 Languages
- 140 Stars
Not bad for a couple of projects, eh?
WordPress.org
This year I did not make any contribution to the WordPress Core, I did contribute in 2015, but my plugins in the repo are going well.
- 3 Plugins
- 12,506 downloads
- 4.6 review rating average
You can see all the details in my year in wp site.
SideProjects
For many time I’ve created and maintained a lot of sites and projects for clients, late in 2016, I decided that I will give it a shot to a few side projects, projects that do not consume too much time but where I can learn more about Marketing and unrelated coding subjects.
This project starts with the idea to use Reddit as a source to get value data, in this case, know what is the most mentioned laptop on the subreddit SuggestALaptop.
The project is so simple, a WordPress site using the twentyseventeen theme, a couple of Custom posts and a scrapper script using WP_CLI that run every week to get the data.
This project gives me the chance to learn more about WP_CLI with all the beauty of the command line.
This project is not completed yet, but I want to try to build an Authority site about bearded men and try to make money with it, right now is just a page with and opt-in form.
I bought this site a couple of years ago, but I lost interest in it almost immediately, the site is making about $US50 per month but is losing tracking.
Maybe is time to find a new owner.
Earnings 💸
Work at something you love and you will never work a day in your life
I love my job; I love coding, but I need to pay the bills too right? So, here is my 2016 income report, let me tell you, for a third world country this revenue is like 3x the average for what a professional engineer make working for a Mexican company, So I’m very happy with this amount, and I hope to make more revenue this year.
I think this is it for now and I really, really want to continue with my writing habit and post more often.
